Influencer marketing in Coimbatore and Kochi
Two southern cities, two briefs that share almost nothing: Coimbatore runs on mills, workshops and Kongu Tamil; Kochi on a port, a film trade, tourism and a Malayalam audience that lives partly abroad. Languages, buyers, calendars and shoot permissions for each.

Brief Coimbatore as a trade-and-family city that speaks Tamil in a Kongu accent, with a Telugu and a Malayalam minority you can see in the census. Brief Kochi as a port, screen and tourism city that speaks Malayalam, works in English and has relatives in the Gulf. Almost nothing carries over from one brief to the other: not the language, not the festival calendar, not the buyer, not the shoot permissions.
The two briefs in one look
In short
- Coimbatore is a workshop and mill city: Tamil with a Kongu accent, real Telugu and Malayalam minorities, buyers in jewellery, silk, appliances and colleges.
- Kochi is a port, screen and tourism city: Malayalam first, English at work, an audience that lives partly in the Gulf and beyond.
- The festival and wedding calendars do not overlap: Kovai Vizha and the Codissia fairs in one, Onam, Chingam weddings and the Cochin Carnival in the other.
- Shoot permission is written down in both states, and slower in Kerala for heritage sites. Ask before the creator books a flight.
- The desk is in Delhi NCR and has no office in either city.
This guide comes from a desk in Delhi NCR. vexo.club has no office in Coimbatore or Kochi, and nothing below depends on one. Every source is linked and was current as of 24 October 2026, because dates, fees and rules in both states change. Where a point is the desk’s own judgement and not a published fact, it says so.
What keeps Coimbatore running, and why it decides the brief
Coimbatore is a city of small factories before it is a media market. The district administration’s own economy page lists textiles and textile machinery, auto components, pumps and motors, wet grinders, and gold jewellery as the city’s engines. It names Bosch, Pricol, Craftsman Automation and Roots Industries among the auto component makers, and puts the district’s wet grinder makers at more than 700. It says the pump and motor sector supplies over 40 per cent of India’s requirement. That page was last updated in 2018, so read the numbers as a scale and not a current count.
The Hindu BusinessLine describes the Coimbatore, Tirupur and Erode belt as mostly small and medium units, with a fragmented textile industry and few large mills left after the mid 1980s. The Southern India Mills’ Association, founded in 1933, is still based in the region. The practical reading for a brief: money in Coimbatore is made by owners of mid-sized firms who know each other, belong to the same industry associations and trust a recommendation from a peer. That is a different buying instinct from a metro marketing head with a quarterly deck.
What keeps Kochi running, and why it points the other way
Kochi earns from water, wires and cameras. The Vallarpadam container terminal opened in 2011 as India’s first transshipment terminal and is operated by DP World, per its entry in Wikipedia. Cochin Shipyard, a government company incorporated in 1972, builds and repairs ships. In Kakkanad, Infopark was set up by the state in 2004 and now holds IT firms alongside animation, VFX and gaming companies, with part of the land designated as a special economic zone. Kerala Startup Mission keeps a base at the Kerala Technology Innovation Zone in Kalamassery, on its own list of locations.
Add tourism and cinema and the city is a different animal from Coimbatore. Scroll reported some years ago that Kochi is home to many Malayalam film figures and post-production studios and accounts for nearly half of the state’s Malayalam cinema. That report is several years old and the share is unaudited, so use it for direction only. What it means for a brief is firmer: Kochi audiences are used to watching production values, and a creator video that looks careless sits next to a film trailer in the same feed.
Who in Coimbatore actually hires creators
The desk’s read, from the economy above and not from a survey: jewellery and silk showrooms (Oppanakara Street is the city’s dense textile and jewellery street, per Wikipedia), kitchen and home appliance makers selling across India, engineering and arts colleges, restaurants and clinics, and wedding vendors. They want footfall and enquiries, so a creator video with a shop address and a visit offer does the work.
Who tends to buy creators, by city
| Coimbatore | Kochi | |
|---|---|---|
| Jewellery and silk showrooms | High | High |
| Appliance and kitchen brands | High | Medium |
| Colleges and training | High | Medium |
| Hotels, resorts, houseboats | Low | High |
| Film releases and music | Low | High |
| Startups and tech employers | Medium | Medium |
| Pumps, castings, components | low, trade fair first | Low |
The industrial firms are the opposite case. A pump maker, a foundry or an auto component supplier sells to dealers and OEM buyers, and an Instagram creator reaches almost none of them. Their marketing happens at trade fairs. The Codissia trade fair complex lists Intec (engineering and automation), Build Intec, Fabtec, Subcon and Agri Intex among its fairs, with Elektrotec on its 2026 calendar. If your product is B2B, spend on a creator only for employer branding or a dealer explainer, and put the main money into the fair and a distributor list.
Who in Kochi hires creators
Hotels, resorts, houseboat operators and tour sellers lead. Then come malls and restaurants, real estate near the Infopark belt, film releases and music labels, education and migration consultancies, and startups hiring or selling to young staff. Gold and silk retailers buy too, but the tourism and screen buyers are what make Kochi unlike Coimbatore. If your category is travel, the general method is in influencer marketing for travel and hospitality brands and travel vloggers in India.
Tech and startup buyers sit in a third pocket. They are employed, young, English-comfortable and clustered in Kakkanad and Kalamassery, and they watch different creators from the Malayalam-first shopper. A brief for an app or a laptop should not borrow the casting of a brief for a houseboat.
Kovai Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam: the language map of Coimbatore
Tamil is the official language and Kongu Tamil, a dialect, is the one most people speak, per Wikipedia’s Coimbatore entry. The same entry reproduces Census 2011 numbers for the city: Tamil first, then Telugu, then Malayalam and Kannada. Telugu speakers are about one in six residents. Malayalam speakers are about one in fourteen. The entry itself says the table covers the city area before its later expansion, so read the shares as a shape and check the census tables for anything you must quote.
Mother tongues in Coimbatore city, Census 2011
| Item | Value (% of city population) |
|---|---|
| Tamil | |
| Telugu | |
| Malayalam |

Three things follow. One: a script written in standard Chennai Tamil will be understood, and may still sound like an advertisement from somewhere else. Test it with a Kongu speaker before the shoot. Two: for a product sold into Telugu-speaking households, a Telugu cut is a real option, not a courtesy. Three: Malayalam-speaking residents are a small but visible minority, and Kerala is a short drive away, so a Malayalam subtitle track costs little. For the general method of running one claim in several languages, see a regional launch in four languages.
The creator side is local to the region. Reporting on a Coimbatore-region YouTube channel built in Kongu Tamil shows rural comedy and everyday-life content in the dialect finding an audience across Tamil Nadu. We cannot count the creators or rank them, and no roster is published for either city. Treat the dialect as a casting filter: ask each shortlisted creator to send two unedited minutes, and listen.
Coimbatore at a glance: languages and trades

Malayalam on screen, English at the desk and the Gulf in the comments
Malayalam is the main language of Kochi, and English is the preferred language of higher education and business, per Wikipedia’s Kochi entry. It also notes sizeable Tamil, Gujarati and Konkani communities, with Tamil and Hindi widely understood and rarely spoken. So a Kochi brief picks the language by audience: Malayalam for food, family, film and local retail; English for Infopark and startup audiences; and if a Gujarati or Konkani trading family is your customer, say so.
The audience also does not stay in Kerala. The Kerala Migration Survey 2023, by the Gulati Institute of Finance and Taxation with the International Institute of Migration and Development, is summarised in The Indian Express. It estimates 2.2 million emigrants from the state, with 1.8 million returnees. The share going somewhere other than the Gulf countries rose from 10.8 per cent in 2018 to 19.5 per cent in 2023, and students are a growing group among them. For a brief: a Malayalam creator’s comments can hold viewers in Dubai, Doha and further afield, and some of them have money to spend on Kerala products, travel and gold. Others are the wrong people if your delivery stops at the state border. Our wider read is in South Indian influencers.
Kochi at a glance: languages and trades

Check where the audience sits before you pay for the city
A creator’s bio says Kochi. Their viewers may not. Instagram’s help page on insights says audience demographics cover top countries and top cities, and YouTube’s audience report help lists a Geography report showing which geographies have the most watch time. Ask for screenshots of both before you sign. For Kochi, check the Gulf share. For Coimbatore, check whether the audience is in the city, in Chennai or in the wider Kongu towns. If the share in your delivery area is thin, the creator is a poor buy at any follower count.
Where a campaign meets a shopper in each city
In Coimbatore, the commercial map is Oppanakara Street for cloth and gold, and the Codissia complex, which hosts the trade fairs and the Coimbatore Shopping Festival (its site lists the 2025 edition from 24 December to 1 January). The Kovai Vizha listings add store discounts and restaurant offers. The 2025 edition ran from 14 to 24 November, but earlier editions were held in January, so confirm the next dates before anchoring a campaign to it. A retail brief can anchor creator content to these dated moments instead of inventing its own.
In Kochi, shopping is mall-led. The Lulu Mall at Edapally and the Forum Mall are the large ones. Onam shopping is spread across neighbourhood fairs run by community associations and ladies’ groups, per a local guide to Onam week, a blog and not an official source. For a launch, that means the creator content should name the neighbourhood and not only the city.
The festival and wedding year, city by city
Kerala’s calendar in 2026 ran like this. Atham fell on 16 August and Thiruvonam on 26 August, with Thrippunithura’s Athachamayam procession marking the start, and traffic restrictions in force that Sunday. Then came Chingam, the Malayalam month that Kerala treats as auspicious for weddings. Guruvayur temple solemnised 362 weddings in one morning on the second Sunday of Chingam. Wedding jewellery, silk and travel content therefore bunch in August and September, which surprises brands expecting the North Indian November to March season. The general season is in wedding season influencer marketing in India.
Two calendars that do not line up
| Month | On the calendar |
|---|---|
| February | Build Intec Coimbatore: building and construction fair at the Codissia complex |
| June | Intec Coimbatore: the engineering and automation fair |
| July | Aadi lull Tamil families traditionally avoid weddings from mid July to mid August |
| August | Onam Kerala: Atham to Thiruvonam, with Thrippunithura and market fairs |
| September | Chingam weddings Kerala: Guruvayur wedding rush in the month of Chingam |
| November | Kovai Vizha Coimbatore: city festival, 14 to 24 November in 2025; earlier editions ran in January, so confirm the next dates |
| December | Carnival and Biennale Kochi: Cochin Carnival, and the Biennale when an edition is on |
Late in the year Kochi turns to its streets. The Cochin Carnival fills the last two weeks of December in Fort Kochi and ends with the burning of the Pappanji figure at midnight on 31 December, on a beach that fills with crowds. The Kochi-Muziris Biennale ran its sixth edition from 12 December 2025 to 31 March 2026 at Aspinwall House and elsewhere, per the foundation’s news page. No date for the next edition had been published as of 24 October 2026, so check before planning around one.
Coimbatore’s year is more commercial. The Tamil months of Thai, Panguni, Vaikasi and Aippasi are the traditional wedding months, and Aadi, from mid July to mid August, is avoided, so jewellery and cloth brands should expect a lull in Aadi and plan around it. That is the community’s calendar and not a published rule, so ask a panchangam source for the year you are planning. Then come Deepavali, the December shopping festival at Codissia and Kovai Vizha, whose dates have moved between November and January, so confirm them for the year you plan.
The order of the main local dates after the monsoon

Permission to film: what is written down in each state
In Tamil Nadu, film and TV shoots in government-owned places go through the Tamil Nadu Single Window Portal, with the Department of Information and Public Relations granting permission. The checklist asks for a no objection certificate from the department that owns the place, such as the Director of Archaeology for heritage buildings, the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests for national parks, sanctuaries and reserve forests, and the Chief Engineer for highways. Fees are charged per day by location type, with a refundable caution deposit. Check the current schedule, because we are not quoting amounts.
One caution on all of that: the document is written for film and TV shoots. We found no published line saying whether a branded creator reel on a public street counts. Do not guess. Put the question to the authority in writing and save the reply. For a shop interior or a private venue, the owner’s written consent is the thing to hold.
Kerala adds a few specifics. The State Archaeology Department’s service page says permission to shoot documentary, feature film or photography in its museums needs an application at least three months in advance, with a three-month disposal time and a fixed fee. Kochi Metro publishes guidelines for film and commercial shoots on its premises, with a tariff and an application workflow. Read both before you promise a client a metro station scene.
Fort Kochi is its own problem. In 2022 the Kerala High Court heard a petition from residents of the heritage area, who said year-round film shooting damaged property and caused noise and obstruction. The court declined to frame new guidelines. It pointed back to an earlier 2017 judgment directing the police to regulate shoots under the Collector’s letter of 27 November 2016. The desk’s reading is that a crew bigger than a phone and a gimbal, working Princess Street or the Burgher Street lanes without notice to the local police, should expect to be stopped. A single creator filming quickly is lower risk, but ask the station.
Before a creator travels to shoot in either city
- Who owns the spot: a private owner, a temple board, a department, a port or metro authority, a forest range?
- Does the owner treat a branded reel as a film or commercial shoot, with a tariff and an application?
- Heritage monument in Kerala: has the application gone to the archaeology department at least three months out?
- Fort Kochi streets: has the local police station been told, and are residents likely to object?
- Reserve forest or sanctuary near Coimbatore: has the forest authority issued its no objection?
- Written reply saved, with the name and date, before the shoot day.
Four steps before a creator shoots in Coimbatore or Kochi

Logistics that change the plan
Kochi’s weather is a scheduling input. The south-west monsoon covers the Kerala coast from June to September, and houseboat and open-water content is hard to plan then. Houseboats are privately operated, so the operator is the first permission. A brief that says Kochi backwaters should also state which stretch of water was filmed, because a houseboat cruising a lake or canal well outside the city is not Kochi, and a viewer who has made the trip notices. During Onam and Carnival, expect crowds, closures and traffic restrictions in Thrippunithura and Fort Kochi, and schedule shoots at dawn or on non-peak days.
The harder part of a Coimbatore shoot is access. A shoot in a mill or a foundry needs the owner’s consent, safety briefings and a plan around shifts. Creator content in Tirupur, the knitwear town near Coimbatore described on the district site, is also feasible, but is a different shoot in a different town. Name the town in the brief and not only the city.
What to write into each brief
For Coimbatore: the language (Tamil, tested with a Kongu speaker), whether a Telugu or Malayalam cut matters, the street or trade you sell into, the date anchors from Kovai Vizha to the December fair, and who owns every shoot location. For Kochi: the language by audience, the share of the audience that must be in Kerala, the exact stretch of water or street, the Onam, Chingam and Carnival dates to avoid or ride, and a written note on every permission. For anything else about writing a brief, how to brief an influencer marketing agency covers it once, in full.
What each brief has to change
Coimbatore brief
- Script in Tamil, tested for Kongu phrasing
- Decide whether Telugu and Malayalam pockets matter
- Cast to the shopping street or the trade, not the city name
- Time around Kovai Vizha, Deepavali and the December fair
Kochi brief
- Script in Malayalam, English only for tech and corporate
- Export where the audience sits: Kerala, Gulf, elsewhere
- Name the exact stretch of water or street
- Time around Onam, Chingam, Carnival and the monsoon
Here is a paste-ready paragraph for a Coimbatore brief. Our customers are jewellery and silk buyers in Coimbatore and its Kongu belt. Creators post in Tamil with natural Kongu phrasing. Each creator shows an Instagram audience screenshot with top cities before we contract. Content is tied to Kovai Vizha and the December Codissia shopping festival, and each shoot location comes with written owner consent. We will not run a Telugu cut unless the audience screenshot shows a Telugu audience.
And one for Kochi. Our customers are travellers and Malayalam-speaking families in Kerala, and some Gulf-based Malayalis. Creators post in Malayalam. Each shows a top-countries and top-cities screenshot before we contract, and we reject any audience with a thin Kerala share. Content avoids Onam week traffic hotspots, uses no Fort Kochi heritage lane without police and DTPC notice, and names the exact stretch of backwater. Metro and museum scenes are quoted and applied for separately.
Questions brands ask
Do I need a Kongu Tamil creator for Coimbatore, or is a Chennai Tamil creator enough? Chennai Tamil will be understood, but a Kongu accent reads as local to people who live in the Kongu belt. For retail brands selling to families in Coimbatore, test both with a short sample and listen. For a national brand speaking to all of Tamil Nadu, standard Tamil is usually fine.
Is Telugu or Malayalam content worth doing in Coimbatore? Sometimes. Census 2011 shows Telugu speakers at roughly one in six city residents and Malayalam at about one in fourteen. Do it when your seller or customer is part of those communities, and ask for audience data before paying for an extra cut.
Which language works in Kochi: Malayalam or English? Malayalam for food, retail, family and film audiences, and English for the startup and Infopark crowd. Tamil and Hindi are widely understood but rarely spoken in the city, so they rarely carry a campaign alone.
When should a Kerala launch avoid the calendar? Avoid Onam week for anything that needs undivided attention, and avoid the last two weeks of December in Fort Kochi. Ride them instead if you sell festival goods. Wedding jewellery and silk have their window in Chingam, in August and September.
Can I film a reel in Fort Kochi without permission? A single person with a phone is a different thing from a crew. The Kerala High Court has had residents of the heritage area complain of year-round film shooting, and the police are directed to regulate it. Heritage monuments run by the archaeology department need an application at least three months ahead. Ask the local police station and DTPC Ernakulam before you plan anything bigger.
Should a Coimbatore pump or engineering company hire influencers? For customers, usually not. They buy through dealers and trade fairs, and the Codissia fairs are the dated place to be seen. Creators can still help with employer branding or a dealer explainer in Tamil.
How do I know a Kochi creator reaches Kerala and not just the Gulf? Ask for the Instagram top countries and cities view and the YouTube Geography report, both described in the platforms’ own help pages. If most viewers are outside your delivery area, the follower count means little for sales.
Does vexo.club have an office in Coimbatore or Kochi? No. The desk is in Delhi NCR and works with creators wherever they live. Anything needed on the ground, such as a location owner or a permission, is scoped into the plan and the quote up front.
If you have a Coimbatore or Kochi brief and want a second pair of eyes on the language, audience screenshot or shoot plan before you spend, send it through the contact page with the city, the category and the date you need to be live.
